this collection features photos which are grounding and represent the feeling or moment of connection

Featured above are pictures from a recent trip to Serbia. The photos document my exposure to and connection with Eastern Europe and its culture. Only a four hour flight from Edinburgh, Serbia presents a completely different culture and perspective on art, community and everyday life. While traveling there (it’s the farthest east I’ve been) I noticed that the snus is SO much better there, I don’t know what they put in that stuff but a hundred times better. But aside from the snus, the quality of food, relationships and life seems to balance itself into a bustling city center. Families spend time in the limited winter sunlight embracing the freezing temperatures. Well manicured women with the nails and fur to boot cross walking their Pomeranians. The cold exterior broken by a friendly chat about our six month old King Charles, provide provides warmth and community to tourists and locals alike.
Notably, the architecture of the city is what interested me the most. The tunnel effect of the cascading brutalist stories rising on your left and right as you walk (image 2) draws your attention away from the bustling crossings. Much like the western strip of in your face advertisements and outreach of capitalism is noticed in the mega malls and McDonald’s dotted on every other corner. While the modern is placed at your nearest convenience, other cultural monuments such as the Church of St Sava (image 1) dazzle the viewer with a gold mosaic interior. Many locals come to pay their respects; kissing devotional images of the many saints within Eastern Orthodox Catholicism, or tourists like me to soak in the spectacular religious atmosphere. . .
